How are Alloy Wheels Made?
Aluminum alloy wheels look great on any car but have you ever asked yourself how they are made? Here is the answer!
The first step in the process of manufacturing these wheels is the receiving of the aluminum ingot. This is the main raw material used in the making of alloy wheels. Once in the factory, the ingot is analyzed chemically and only the best quality is used in the subsequent processes.
Approved aluminum ingots are heated in a heat furnace at 720 degrees Celsius for 25 minutes. This melts it and it is then poured into a mixer. In this mixer, the density of the material is increased by pumping in Argon gas which removes all hydrogen. To create an alloy, the aluminum is mixed with magnesium, titanium and other materials.
After this, the molding process starts. This involves the use of strong molds to cast the now liquid alloy. The casting is done from down going up to prevent air bubbles. Low pressure is applied and the casting tested. This is then removed from the cast and left to cool to warm temperatures. After this, intermittent hot and cold temperatures are used to treat the alloy wheel. The aim of this is to strengthen the wheel.
When the wheel is strong enough, it is cooled and later released for finishing. This is done both manually and automatically. The wheel is cut and polished so it is perfect. It is then painted and finally checked for quality and distributed to distributors.
